10 Tips for Varnishing a painting

1. The varnish can either be painted or sprayed onto the surface.

2. The paint must be completely dry before varnishing.
(An oil painting requires several months to dry depending on the thickness of the paint, and even longer for heavy impasto work.)

3. The painting must be clean from dust, dirt and grease before you apply the varnish. You can use a big brush or a soft cloth to clean the surface.

4. The varnish can be applied with a brush (flat bristle brush), and the brushstroke should be painted in one direction only.

5. Make sure the brush you use is clean and free of moisture.

6. Don't varnish just parts of the painting. Make sure every part is covered and the whole of the painting should be varnished at the same time.

7. Use at least two thin coats of varnish to get an even finish.

8. Keep the painting flat for a while after you have finished varnishing to avoid the varnish running down the painting.

9. Apply the varnish in a dust-free environment or as close to dust-free as possible.

10. Do not touch the painting surface until the varnish is dry.
