Painting: Using Gouache

Application:
Gouache can be applied with either brushes, pens or airbrush.
Different brushes will create different effects and can be bought in a variety of types and sizes.
Bristle brushes are often used for more expressive paint marks, and sable brushes can be used if you requite the more transparent watercolour effect.

Surfaces:
Gouache can be applied to most surfaces, but is usually applied to either white or tinted watercolour paper. Some artists also use coloured pastel paper, mount board or cardboard paper.

Using Goache:
Gouache can be applied in thick layers as with oils, or in thin transparent washes as with watercolours.

It can also be used for small and detailed paintings or as highlights in watercolours.

The paint is very flexible and can be used in combination with watercolours or mixed with other water based paints.

Gouache can be applied as solid colours and can be over painted in layers.

It is often used by designers and illustrators for graphic and design work.

The paint dries to a matte finish but will not be waterproof like acrylics.
