Texture Gallery - Thread and Fabric

This texture was created with a layer of Acrylic gesso, rice, one acrylic colour, and a sheet of acrylic paper.

Painted with Yellow Ochre

Detailed close-up

First, a thick layer of Acrylic Gesso was applied to a sheet of acrylic paper. While the gesso was still wet, rice were spread on top and arranged into the desired design. The rice were lightly pressed into the gesso with a palette knife and left to dry for a for half an hour until the gesso was dry. (time depending on room temperature).

When the texture was dry, further 3 layers of gesso, mixed with plenty of water, were applied on top of the rice until the whole texture was covered with gesso.

A wash of Burnt Umber acrylic paint was then applied, covering the whole surface

Artist Notes:
The texture was later painted with a wash of Yellow Ochre to create a deeper tone and to remove the white areas in the painting.
Only white rice was used to create this texture. A brown rice or a mixture of the two could have been used to create a different colour tone (or effect depending on the different sizes of rice used).
