Texture Gallery - Using Candle Wax

This texture was created with a layer of Acrylic Gesso, Candle Wax, two different acrylic colours, and a sheet of acrylic paper.

Candle Wax

Detailed close-up

First, a thick layer of acrylic gesso was applied to a sheet of acrylic paper.

While the gesso was still wet, pieces of candle wax drops was spread on top and lightly pressed into the gesso

When the gesso was dry, several layers of more gesso mixed with plenty of water were applied on top of the candle wax. (the gesso was left to dry between each layer.)

At last, a wash of Deep purple acrylic paint was applied over the texture, covering the whole surface.

Preparing the candle wax:
1. Fill a glass or bowl with cold water.
2. Light a candle and carefully let the melting wax drip into the water in small drops.
3. Wait a couple of minutes until the wax has cooled down and then remove the "candle drops" from the water with a fork and let them dry
on a piece of kitchen roll.

Artist Notes:
A painting knife or a piece of cardboard can be used to flatten and arrange the materials on the surface.

Modeling paste or thick paint could have been used instead of gesso.

The candle used in this texture was white. Coloured candles can be used for more tone and colour.
