Texture Gallery - Using Sesame Seeds

This texture was created with a layer of acrylic gesso, sesame seeds (normally used for cooking/baking), two different acrylic colours and a sheet of acrylic paper.

Sesame Seeds

Detailed close-up

First, a thick layer of acrylic gesso was applied to a sheet of acrylic paper.

While the gesso was still wet, a thick layer of sesame seeds was spread on top and lightly pressed into the gesso.

When the gesso was dry, several layers of more gesso mixed with plenty of water were applied on top of the seeds. (the gesso was left to dry between each layer.)

A layer of Cadmium Red Deep acrylic paint was then applied over the texture, covering the whole surface.

After the red paint was dry, a light wash of Phthalo Green was painted on top.

Artist Notes:
A painting knife or a piece of cardboard can be used to flatten and arrange the materials on the surface.

As the seeds were applied in a very thick layer, the many applications of gesso was necessary to make sure all the seeds were attached to the surface.
