Texture Gallery - Using Cotton

This texture was created with a layer of Acrylic gesso, pieces of cotton, four different acrylic colours, and a sheet of acrylic paper.

Cotton

Detailed close-up

First, a thick layer of acrylic gesso was applied to a sheet of acrylic paper.

While the gesso was still wet, small pieces of cotton was spread on top and painted over with more gesso.

More cotton pieces was then added in several layers, and each layer was covered with a mix of gesso and water.

When the cotton texture was dry, a semi-thick layer of Yellow Ochre acrylic paint was applied on top, covering the whole surface.

Next, some Cadmium Red was applied with a large dry brush (no water added to the brush), touching only the top of the texture. The brush was moved in different directions to create a variation of brush strokes.

This technique was then repeated with the next colour, Deep Violet, and when dry, some bright pink was applied randomly on top to create highlights.

Artist Notes:
It is important to use lots and lots of gesso to make sure the cotton is absolutely soaked.

Too little gesso will create dry areas within the cotton, which will appear soft underneath the paint.
