First, a thick layer of white acrylic paint was applied to a sheet of acrylic paper.
While the acrylic paint was still wet, pieces of grass straws was spread on top and lightly pressed into the paint.
After the straws were evenly applied, more white paint was painted on top to cover the surface and completely attach the straws to the background.
A layer of Cadmium Red was then applied, covering the whole surface.
Next, a wash of Phthalo blue was painted on top and any excess paint removed with a sheet of kitchen roll.
Artist Notes:
Acrylic gesso can be used instead of the white acrylic paint for creating the background.
Very little water was used when painting the white and red layers, as thick paint was required to properly attach the straws to the background.
The sheet of kitchen roll was used to create more background texture.
Tissue paper or a cloth could be used as an alternative to kitchen roll if a different pattern was desired.
Modeling paste or texture paste could also have been used to create this or similar textures, but might be a bit thicker and harder to work with.
