Texture Gallery - Pasta imprints in Modeling Paste

This texture was created with Modeling Paste, raw Pasta (normally used for cooking), three different acrylic colours, and a sheet of acrylic paper.

Pasta

Detailed close-up

First, a thick layer of Modeling Paste was applied to a sheet of acrylic paper. While the modeling paste was still wet, pieces of pasta was spread on top and lightly pressed into the paste to create an imprint.

When the modeling paste was semi-dry, the pasta was removed and the modeling paste was left to dry for an hour. (time depending on room temperature)

A wash of Phtaloe Blue was then applied, covering the whole surface.

Next a wash of Burnt Sienna was painted randomly over the blue colour, and a thicker layer of Cadmium red was applied on top (carefully avoiding the "pasta imprints").

At last, more Cadmium red was applied with a dry brush, just touching the "top" of the texture.

Artist Notes:
The paint need to be dry before the next layer can be applied!

A piece of cardboard can be used to push the pasta deeper into the modeling paste. (be careful not to press too hard, as the pasta might break).

The pasta should be removed before the modeling paste has dried completely, as it might be too difficult to remove once dry.

No acrylic gesso was used for preparation when creating this texture, but can be applied before the modeling paste if a smoother background is desired.
