Texture Gallery - Thread and Fabric

This texture was created with a layer of Acrylic gesso, thread from a cotton canvas, two different acrylic colours, and a sheet of acrylic paper.

Piece of canvas

Detailed close-up

A small piece of canvas was first torn into short thin threads which was mixed together (on an artist palette) with red acrylic paint.

The mix of thread and paint was then applied to a piece of acrylic paper which had been prepared earlier with two layers of Acrylic white Gesso.

As the thread easily "crumbles" together when wet, and can be hard to separate, several layers of paint and tread was applied on top of each other as soon as the previous layer had dries.

This was done in order to make sure the thread was evenly spread on the surface. When all the layers had dried, a light wash of deep Violet acrylic paint was applied on top.

Artist Notes:
Instead of canvas, other types of threads and fabric could be used to create similar textures.

Different thickness and colours (both on thread and paint) would create different depth and effects.

As acrylic paper is normally bought pre-primed it is not always necessary to use any additional primer. Extra primer was used in this instance to provide extra support for these very heavy layers of paint.
