Different Types of Pastels


Soft pastel:

Can be purchased individually or in sets of different colour assortments.

Crumbles easily

Often used over and on top the hard pastels to give a more rich, intense and full colour to the painting

Are easier to spread and blend, and can be re-worked and layered easily.

Contains more pigments (and less binder) then hard pastels, which makes the colour rich and vivid.



Hard pastels:

Have usually a square shape.

Gives a more linear appearance to a stroke.

Often used for under-painting or under-sketching.

Have more binder then soft pastels and are therefore more durable.

Can be used to create sharp and linear details.

Can be sharpened or shaped to achieve more precise effects.
