Pastel Tips

Tips for Drawing and painting with Pastels:

1.
You can use your finger or a piece of tissue paper to blend and mix the pastels on the paper.

2.
The pastels should always be kept clean while you are working to avoid any unwanted smears or smudges from other colours.

3.
Remember that you are working from dark to light instead of light to dark as in normal painting.

4.
Use acid free paper to preserve the image.

5.
Cover areas already worked with paper to prevent smudging while working.

6.
When starting out, buy the basic colours and then add different colours and shades as you need them.

Tips for framing your Pastel work:

Have your pastels professionally framed under acid-free matboard and glass.

Clean the glass on both sides with anti-static cleaner.

Use a spacer between the pastel and the mat so any loose particles can escape.

Gently tap the back of the pastel to get rid of any excess dust.

Caring for your Pastel Work:

Pastel work should not be placed in direct sunlight or be exposed to extreme heat or high humidity.

Pastel painting should always be face up when they are not hanging on the wall.

Pastel work should be stored in a flat position.

Tracing paper can be used to cover pastel drawings when laying flat during storage.

The surface of a pastel painting should never be touched and should always be protected from water.
