Pastel Surfaces

There are many different types of surfaces for pastels, and almost any surface that has sufficient texture surface can be used, including pastel boards, paper and canvas. (Pastels will not stick to a smooth surface).

Some paper is specially produced for use with Hard and Soft pastels. These are usually acid-free and will have different grades of "tooth", which refers to refers to how much of the pastel pigment the paper will hold.

Paper with very little tooth will result in a smooth finish, while a heavily sanded paper will hold more pigment and produce more texture.

You will also find there are paper types which will work best with hard pastels while others are better for soft pastels.

There is also a large range of coloured and tinted paper available for pastel artists, and most paper can be bought in either pads or single sheets or cards.

Some artists also use watercolour paper for their pastel drawings as this usually also have varying degrees of texture and Pastels can also be used on boards and panels with different sanded and textured surfaces.
