Painting surfaces
As an artist it is important to spend some time choosing and preparing the painting surface, as
different supports (surfaces) will affect the result you are able to achieve. The type of surface you chose
will also depend upon the purpose of the work, what media you use and the desired visual effect.
There are many types of painting supports to choose from, each with their own unique qualities, advantages or limitations.
Canvases, papers and boards can be bought directly from the art suppliers, prepared, primed and ready for use.
Some artist however choose to prepare their own support,
stretch their own canvases or paint on more untraditional surfaces as metal or plastic.
Beginning artists might want to start with the more inexpensive solutions like hardboard or paper.
More experienced artists often choose to invest in a canvas, or experiment with other surfaces, shapes or forms.
The choice of surface also depends on the scale of your painting project as paper and boards can be more limited in size.

Below are a list of the most used painting surfaces for artists.
