Painting Techiques: Knife Painting

knife painting Knife painting is a form of Impasto painting and is applied with a painting knife (or palette knife)

The paint is applied in thick layers using either side of the knife and the marks can be varied by the amount of paint used or by the direction of the strokes.

A texturing medium/gel can also be mixed with the paint to create thicker and heavier marks.
Modeling Paste can be used as an underlayer to build up the paint.

The painting knife can aslo be used to scratch back into the paint or to create and reinforce lines.

Samples of texture where a painting/palette knife has been used can be found in our Texture Gallery
