Painting: Gouache

Gouache is a heavy, quick drying and opaque watercolour paint.

It is more opaque than watercolours as the pigments are mixed with a water soluble gum substance in addition to water. White pigments or chalk are also added to enhance the opacity.

Gouache produces thick strong opaque layers of paint which appears less wet than ordinary watercolours.

The colours dries lighter than when wet and this can make the colour matching more difficult if you have to mix more colours at a later stage.

The paint dries quickly (like acrylics), and is very good for covering previous painted layers as it does not allow any of the paper to show through the paint (unless mixed with lots of water).

The paint is designed to be applied thickly instead of thin washes, but should not be applied in too many layers to avoid cracking of paint.

Gouache is water soluble so brushes and palette can be cleaned with water. The paint is available in a large selection of opaque matte colors and can be bought in either tubes or bottles.
