Painting Tool: Glaze and Varnishing

Varnish
Varnish & Gloss Mediums can be used as a non-removable picture varnish where a permanent glossy protective coat is needed, or as a painting and glazing medium.
A Matte medium/varnish can be used to reduce glare and gloss and produce a
non-reflecting finish.

The varnish protects the finished paintings from dirt and pollution in the air and provides a protective film over the paint which can be later cleaned and also removed to be re-applied with a fresh layer.

Glaze Medium
Glaze medium is a thin transparent gloss or mat coating which is applied in thin layers over another painted surface to modify the original colour or tone underneath.

The Glaze Medium will not adds any extra texture or body to the colour, but will increase the transparency and slightly slow down the drying process.

Adding gloss medium to acrylics also makes the paint glossier, eases the flow of paint and leaves a shiny surface when dry.

The medium can be mixed with acrylic colour on a palette and applied with a brush or knife.
