Painting Surfaces: Canvas
The advantages of painting on an artist canvas is that there is no framing required
and the picture is ready for display as soon as the image has been painted (and dry).
Occationally, artist choose to put an additional frame around their canvas,
however, most artists prefere to diplay unframed canvas paintings.
Ready prepared canvases (stretched and primed) can be purchased directly from most art suppliers.
But, as there is will always be a restriction in which sizes and shapes are available,
many professional artist stretch their own canvas using wooden stretcher bars and canvas rolls (primed or unprimed).
If the canvas is unprimed, the artist need to seal the surface by applying a couple of
layers of primer.

Box Canvas
This is a canvas which is wrapped around a box stretcher bar and attached using staples.
The edges can be painted and a frame is not required.
Artist roll canvas
Both cottons and linens canvases can be bought in rolls for artist wishing to stretch their own canvas.
Linen has a much smoother feel than cotton, but is more expensive.
Most brands will manufacturer both primed and unprimed canvases.
Canvas pads
Canvas pads are a paper alternative to canvas.
The pads can usually be purchased in different thickness and sizes, they are ready primed, and can be used for most painting mediums.
These are often used by practicing and beginning artists as they are cheaper than a canvas.
A canvas pads is also good for testing colours, textures and other art materials before painting on a more expensive canvas or painting surface.
