Painting Tools: Artist Sponges

Sponges are used by artists in many different applications and disciplines and artist sponges can be used to produce a variation of effects and textures.

They are a valuable tool in the
artist's studio, as apart from texturing, they can also be used for applying large washes and cleaning up unwanted paint or moisture.

As sponges can be applied in a variety of techniques, there are many different types of sponges available, and just as many ways in which they can be used.

Sponges can also be used to delete brush strokes tracks and correct mistakes.

Sponges are also used in Stencilling which is a masking technique where the artist apply paint to certain areas of the painting while blocking out other parts of the image.

Most arts suppliers will sell a variation of sponges, both man-made and sea sponges, allowing the artists to experiment with different types and sizes depending on the effect they wish to create.
