Painting Tools: The Artist Palette Knife

The palette knife is a blunt-tipped knife with thin flexible blade used for mixing colours, clearing and scraping the paint off the canvas or palette. They are made from metal, wood or plastic and will either have a straight or a bent handle. Palette knifes (or painting knifes) come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.

The knife has no sharpened cutting edge and is ideal for creating smooth, consistent mixtures of paint and medium.

Paint example using a paletteknife Some painters also use a palette knife (painting knife) to apply paint to the painting as they are excellent for quick and expressive work and for covering large areas.

The palette knife is great for creating impasto work and can produce interesting textures and patterns.

Artists also use the palette knife to scratch lines or symbols into the painting while the paint is still wet.

Tips:
When using the palette knife with acrylic paint, it is important to clean the knife immediatly after use. This is because acrylics dry very quickly and can be difficult to remove once dry.
