Painting Tools: The Artist Palette

The artist palette can be made of wood, plastic, metal and glass is an object the artist use for mixing and thinning the paint before application.

For acrylic paints you can also purchase a wet palette which keep the paint moist and stop it from drying to fast.

Some artists choose to make their own palette by using a plate or a piece of wood.

Other palette options:

Palette Cups:
are great for both field work and for use in the studio. The cups (available in both single or double cups) are mounted onto a clip which attaches to the side of a flat artist palette. Made from plastic, the cups are resistant to both oil and acrylic mediums.

Ceramic palettes:
are normally made of glazed porcelain and are ideal for use with acrylic paints as the paint do not stick to the surface. Dried paint can just be washed in hot water and the paint should easily lift off.

Wet Palette::
are made using a wet sponge and special palette paper. This provide the paint with a constant source of moisture and can keeps acrylics and other water-based paints moist on the palette for hours.
The paints can stay in workable condition for days or longer with a closed lid.

Disposable palettes
are pads of plastic coated paper which make a usable palette for watercolours, acrylics or oils. The papers can be thrown away after use so no cleaning of palette is neccesary.
