Painting Tools: Acrylic Gesso

Acrylic Gesso is a liquid primer the artist use to seal the painting surface before applying the paint.

It can be used on a variety of absorbent surfaces and act as a coating or a film which is applied onto a canvas, board or paper.

Canvas, boards and paper can be purchased ready-primed from the manufacturer, however, some artists choose to prepare their own to create a working surface suitable for their own requirements.
How many coats of primer the artist choose to apply depends on the surface they paint upon and how smooth the surface is required to be. Some primers only require one application, others need re-painting two or three times to completely seal the surface.

Mixing the gesso with some acrylic paint can also thicken the primer and make it less transparent. Acrylic paint can also be added to the gesso if the artist wishes to create a more coloured background as most primers are produces in either black or white. Primers are also excellent for creating textures.

It can be mixed with fabric, sand or other texture materials or applied in thick layers to create heavy brush marks or imprints from objects.
